Bilhi Genetics is a spin-off from Prof. Alain Dessein’s INSERM Research Laboratory, internationally renowned for its work on genetics. Pr. Dessein’s research study took him to various countries such as China, Sudan, Mali and Brazil, where he studied human genetic susceptibility factors of several diseases for over 40 years. Bilhi Genetics was set up by a team of experts with complementary profiles based on Pr. Dessein’s know-how and discoveries. The team is combining genetics and digital technology to develop powerful algorithms which predict and prevent serious diseases and enhance medical care.

Background

Identifying people at risk of developing liver cancer and cirrhosis in Africa, Asia and South America could save millions of lives of patients infected with schistosomiasis.

Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, is a chronic disease caused by parasitic worms that live in certain types of fresh water snails. After Malaria, Schistosomiasis is the second most devastating parasitic disease in tropical countries. In sub-Saharan Africa, more than 200,000 deaths per year are caused by schistosomiasis. Depending on the species of the parasite, schistosomiasis causes liver and intestinal diseases.

Bilhi Genetics, in partnership with leading research institutes, foundations and NGOs is currently trying to organize wide screening programs in Africa and Asia to identify individuals with a high risk of developing liver fibrosis in order to treat them manually with existing anti-bilharzia treatment.

Role of Ahimsa Partners

Counseling on the formulation / drafting of the Bilhi Genetics testing project to perform large-scale prevention of severe forms of fibrosis in patients with Bilharziasis, HBV and / or HCV,

Identification of the main Global Health Stakeholders engaged in the fibrosis diseases,

Advocacy with the main international stakeholders in order to position the project.
